About

This post is also available in:Spanish,Catalan

Philosophy to go is a magazine which is mainly devoted to knowledge, any kind of knowledge. In a strict sense:not everything that is said about the world (which includes us) deserves to be called “knowledge”. We respect every person’s right to express an opinion, but that doesn’t mean every opinion has the same value. An astronomer is a scientist;an astrologist is not. We wish to know about what the former does and thinks;the latter has other places to express his or her views.

This magazine starts its journey with a preeminence of interviews, because they’re the closest thing to a dialog. Sometimes the interviews have been conducted face to face;some others, through the available technological means. This is the case of some articles included in this first issue and which have been born out of questions asked to the authors. However, since our curiosity (and we hope that of our collaborators and readers) is infinite,we accept suggestions for other questions. We want to welcome any contribution which widens our knowledge or suggests new ways of understanding the world. We know we will never be in possession of truth, but we will never give up trying to get as close as we can to it.

The magazine includes interviews, papers, reviews and news. In order to make reading easier, interviews have been fragmented by topic, with links to the full text. Sometimes we also make available the video recording,so that the reader may choose what he or she likes best. In every case we offer a translation in Spanish and English. We will also try to keep the original language of our collaborators,so if anyone speaks in Catalan,German,French or Italian, that language will also be available,on top of English and Spanish. For other languages we will depend on the collaborators’help. At the end of the interviews or papers we also link to other web pages with information about the interviewees or authors,so that the reader can easily access them.

Until now,in paper magazines, reviews were mostly focused on books. Here we widen our scope to other formats:in Philosophy to go,readers may also find links to conferences, talks and other elements usually available on the Internet.

Collaborations will be added as we get them. Some of them will come from the editing board and their collaborators;some others may come from the readers. However, all the texts will be reviewed and selected,in order to maintain a quality standard and keep this forum from becoming a place for exchanging insults,as it happens in some other places on the net.

Some philosophers argue that, today,a global view of the world is not possible anymore. We don’t settle for such a pessimistic view. We are willing to not get anywhere, but not to stop walking. One thing is clear:the new world view,if it comes, will have to come from a number of different fields. The exchange of information between people in different areas of knowledge can only be fruitful. No matter how small the world parcel under investigation,we know that it is part of the whole and it is that which we aspire to understand an share with our readers.

There’s an old saying which goes:“knowledge will set you free.” Not only that,it will also make you happy.

The editors.

Comment policy:

Any reader may comment on our published texts. However,we will only publish those comments which give something to the discussion. Intellectual debate is not going through a good time:interests and, sometimes, personal consideration make discrepancies stay private. Sometimes, criticisms is nothing but sheer revenge against some rival. We are open to criticisms:the limit is respect towards people. Ideas are subject to criticism,as long as they’re criticized with arguments and not insults. We believe debate enriches those who participate in it and those who follow it. It is welcome.

Submissions:

Every reader is invited to submit their own papers, even though we will only publish those which bring something to the discussion. The texts may be about issues already being discussed or about any other,as long as they’re related to knowledge and the world. The editors do not necessarily agree with their collaborators’opinions, nor do they ensure the publishing of every submission. They will do their best to answer every request.

Submissions may be sent to arroyo@philosophytogo.org

Property:

The published papers belong to their authors, which give the right of reproduction to Philosophy to go. The papers may be used by third parties,as long as it’s not done for commercial purposes and with the obligation to credit the author and the source.

Special thanks:

We would like to thank Helena Arroyo for her great pictures and Albert Casado for designing our logo;we would also like to thank everybody who agreed to collaborate with this first issue, even though all we could assure them was that we would try to get somewhere. Without them, this magazine would not exist.

Special thanks:

Philosophy To Go is edited by Francesc Arroyo and Eduard Arroyo.
